Expanding Brackets
Expand double brackets with the grid method, one step at a time. You fill in each step and get corrected straight away.
βοΈ Practise: expand step by step
New to this? Read the Learn it cards below first. Then type a number in each box (use β for negatives) and press Check. Stuck? Press Show me.
π Learn it: why the grid method works
Stuck? Read these four short cards.
The grid method
- Put the terms of the first bracket down the side and the terms of the second bracket across the top.
- Multiply to fill each box. Mind the signs: negative Γ negative = positive.
- Add the four boxes, then collect like terms (the two x boxes combine).
- You can always check by picking a value, say x = 1: both the original and your answer must give the same number.
